Portraying French History
Overview of Lecture Series
The three paintings to be examined in this series mark pivotal moments in French history: the last struggle of the Ancien Regime, the consolidation of the Napoleonic legend and the birth of modern Paris. They also chart the move from commissioned art as propaganda to that of personal statement about art and its relationship to society.
The series will examine the significance of the three painters as well as their depictions of the rapidly changing cultural landscape. Everything from the material culture of jewelry, clothing, textiles, hairstyles will be studied as well as concepts of childhood, class structure and urbanism.
